How to take IC/Passport Photos at the comfort of your home.

Updated: Oct 29, 2024

Need to update your passport or IC photo but don't want to make a trip to the studio? You can easily take high-quality, government-approved photos at home with just a few simple steps. In this guide, we’ll show you how to capture the perfect photo that meets official requirements—all from the comfort of your own space.

Things You Need:

  • A digital camera or smartphone with a high-resolution camera

  • A plain white background. A cloth or white wall works great!

  • Good lighting (natural light works best)

  • A tripod or stable surface to place your camera

  • A willing friend or family member to help you with the process

Step 1: Getting ready

If you're wondering what kind of outfits are the best, almost anything is fine! Just avoid white tops or off shoulder outfits. Have light make up done and make sure your hair is not covering your face.

Step 2: Find a white wall

Or a white cloth works as well. Find a space with great natural lighting to do it. The best areas are the ones directly where the light is. To avoid shadows, we recommend bringing a large piece of white paper or reflector, placing it below where your elbows are.

Avoid golden hours, rainy or cloudy days where the lighting is harsh or too flat. The days where it is sunny are the best!

Step 3: Stabilize your tripod

If you are shooting the photo yourself, you would want to make sure that you are about 30cm away from your phone. Wipe your camera lens and get ready to set the timer!

Step 4: Editing your IC/Passport Photo

If you do not know how to use photoshop, there are other editing softwares or apps can also be a great option for you. A simple google can direct you to a few websites that crops your ID photos. Here's the result of the IC/Passport photo that we took with our iPhone.

Of course, it may not be the best of quality. But for a free and quick photo shoot you'll need urgently, this may be your best option!
